What Define It does

Define It is a browser extension that helps you look up English word definitions from Cambridge Dictionary directly on the page you are reading. It shows the definition, part of speech, CEFR level, pronunciation, and example sentences in a tooltip.

Data stored locally

The following data is stored only on your device using Chrome's built-in storage API:

Saved words — words you choose to bookmark, along with their definition, part of speech, and CEFR level
Settings — your preferences for trigger mode, accent, and number of examples

This data never leaves your browser. It is not sent to any server, analytics service, or third party.

Network requests

Define It makes the following network requests, solely to provide dictionary functionality:

dictionary.cambridge.org — to fetch the definition page for the word you look up. Only the word itself is sent as part of the URL. No cookies, tokens, or personal identifiers are included.
api.datamuse.com — to fetch spelling suggestions when a word is not found. Only the searched word is sent. No personal data is included.

No other network requests are made. Define It does not use analytics, tracking, or telemetry of any kind.

Permissions and why they are needed

activeTab — to read the text you select on the current page
contextMenus — to add a "Look up" option to the right-click menu
storage — to save your bookmarked words and settings locally
offscreen — to parse dictionary HTML in the background (a technical requirement of Chrome's Manifest V3)
Content script on all URLs — so the lookup tooltip can appear on any webpage you visit

Third-party services

Define It does not integrate with any third-party services beyond the two dictionary/suggestion APIs listed above. There are no ads, no affiliate links, and no monetisation.

Children's privacy

Define It does not collect any data from anyone, including children. It is safe for users of all ages.

Changes to this policy

If this policy is updated, the changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date. Since no data is collected, meaningful changes are unlikely.
